In a significant move, the Delhi University (DU) has announced that it will adopt the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admission into PhD programs starting from the academic year 2023-24. This decision marks a departure from the traditional practice of conducting separate written tests and interviews for PhD admissions. The university aims to streamline the admission process and ensure a fair and standardized assessment for prospective candidates. Along with this major change, several other resolutions were approved during the Executive Council meeting, demonstrating DU's commitment to innovation and academic excellence.

PhD Admissions through Common University Entrance Test (CUET)
The Delhi University has decided to entrust the responsibility of conducting the PhD entrance examination to the National Testing Agency (NTA) through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). This move aims to simplify the admission procedure and ensure transparency and fairness. By adopting a common test, DU hopes to attract a diverse pool of talented individuals from across the nation. Previously, the university relied on written tests and interviews as the primary means of assessing candidates for its PhD programs.
This decision comes after the successful implementation of CUET for undergraduate and postgraduate admissions. Last year, DU introduced CUET-UG for undergraduate programs and will now extend this practice to postgraduate programs through CUET-PG. However, it is worth noting that teaching and non-teaching staff employed by the university will have the option to directly appear for interviews, bypassing the entrance test. This accommodation recognizes their valuable contribution and ensures that their duties are not unduly affected during office hours. These new rules will be applicable from the academic session 2023-2024.
Expanded Scope of Medical Science Courses and Research
The Executive Council meeting also approved the eligibility conditions and seat matrix recommendations for admission to undergraduate medical science courses (MBBS/BDS) for the academic session 2023-2024. This decision reinforces DU's commitment to enhancing medical education and expanding opportunities for aspiring healthcare professionals. Furthermore, the entrance test CUET (PG)-2023 will now include MSc admission to the Respiratory Therapy program, further diversifying the scope of medical science courses available at DU.
Establishment of Research Centers
During the meeting, the resolution to establish the Centre for Independence and Partition Studies, which was previously passed in the 1014th Academic Council meeting, received approval. This center will focus on researching and shedding light on the lesser-known heroes and events of the freedom movement that have yet to be acknowledged in history. Additionally, it will delve deep into the incidents surrounding the tragic partition of India. By undertaking such research, DU aims to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of India's struggle for independence.
Moreover, the formation of the Tribal Studies Centre was also approved, signaling DU's commitment to studying and preserving the rich cultural heritage of various tribes across India. This interdisciplinary center will delve into the diverse traditions, languages, and social structures of India's tribal communities, fostering a deeper appreciation for their contributions to the nation's cultural fabric.
Another significant development is the establishment of the Hindu Studies Centre, which will offer a Master of Arts program in Hindu studies. This initiative seeks to promote scholarly research and academic exploration of Hinduism, one of the world's oldest religions. By providing a dedicated center for Hindu studies, DU aims to facilitate a deeper understanding of Hindu philosophy, culture, and traditions.
Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP)
The Executive Council meeting also approved the introduction of the Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) course from the academic session 2023-24. This four-year program will serve as a pilot project, equipping aspiring teachers with comprehensive pedagogical knowledge and practical skills. Du's Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Mahila College, Mata Sundari Mahila Mahavidyalaya, and Jesus and Mary College have already obtained approval from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) to offer ITEP from the session 2023-2024. Additionally, the education department of DU and eight colleges offering the B El Ed course will apply for ITEP in the academic year 2024-2025, further expanding the scope of teacher education at DU.
